Project Martie is a collection of smaller research projects on women in the music industry.

My forthcoming book is a collection of essays and stories about women in music. These women are participants in the music industry, working as performers, songwriters, producers, engineers, agents, festival organizers, critics, technicians, publicists, and managers. Above all, they prize their relationship to music, and endeavour to keep working in their chosen field. Yet they are routinely discouraged from active participation, thanks to historical marginalization and systemic barriers.

The capitalist nature of the music industry encourages consumption over engagement, sharing, and practice, and as a result objectifies and devalues women’s bodies and experiences. In recounting the stories of these women, I present a challenge to the internalized misogynistic tendencies of the industry and its workers, and a re-envisioning of the patriarchal model that has governed music production for so long. In this book, women will take readers into their lives, as they participate in the modern-day music industry.

I am conducting interviews through the spring and summer of 2021.
